In a world where an increasing number of people are logging on to the net via mobile devices, mobile optimisation has become a key area of consideration for website design. The meteoric rise of the iPhone, smart phones and PDAs mean that every organisation should be thinking very carefully about how their website is physically viewed. As we all know, getting the basics wrong is a mistake that can cost a business dearly.
If you are looking for a versatile, attractive, accessible website, there are a few industry techniques you can use, so that whether you access a site from a desktop PC, a laptop or a basic mobile device, you are sure to get a consistent experience.
We use cascading style sheets (CSS) to separate the design from the content, giving the operator free reign to insert content with minimum fuss. This method also enables us to test and subsequently provide a fully functional and mobile-friendly template to our customers.
One way you can check your website’s adaptability in regard to mobile devices is to use Opera’s standard browser to view websites in a condensed window; giving an idea of the impact a reduction in screen size has on your current website.
Opera provides two good testing tools. Using the standard Opera browser, select View > Small Screen to see your page rendered in an approximation of what a mobile screen might display. The Opera web developer bar has a button called Display that allows you to toggle CSS on or off when viewing a page using small screen view. Here you see two Opera small screen views of my blog, Web Teacher, first with CSS, then without.
